The story of The Meadows began in 1827, when Daniel Blake purchased approximately 950 acres along the Buncombe Turnpike and established a summer estate. Originally from England, Blake was among the affluent Charleston-area residents who traveled from the South Carolina Lowcountry to the mountains of Western North Carolina during the summer months. After the family’s original frame home burned around 1860, Blake’s son Robert built the stone residence that stands today.
Constructed primarily with local materials, including granite reportedly quarried from nearby Burney Mountain, the home reflects the American Italianate style popular during the mid-19th century. Its two-story stone exterior, low hipped roof, semi-hexagonal bays, tall windows and broad porches remain defining features. Inside, the residence retains notable 19th-century craftsmanship, including millwork in mahogany, maple, black walnut, cherry and oak. An original cupola was later replaced with a skylight.
The Blake family’s influence extended beyond The Meadows. Daniel Blake was among the early founders associated with St. John in the Wilderness in Flat Rock, established by members of the Lowcountry community who made Western North Carolina their seasonal home. Later, a gathering at The Meadows in 1857 helped lead to the organization of Calvary Episcopal Church in Fletcher, with the Blake family subsequently donating land for the church and a schoolhouse. The property also carries an intriguing piece of local lore. Wild grapes discovered on the land in the early 1800s were reportedly taken to South Carolina and cultivated as the Catawba grape, a variety that later gained prominence in American winemaking.
Nearly two centuries later, The Meadows sits within a dramatically different Fletcher. Commercial and industrial growth had already reached the surrounding area when the property was nominated to the National Register in 1979. Today, its location, nearly 6,000 square feet of interior space, existing parking and 2.5-acre setting create potential for hospitality, restaurant, office or other commercial concepts, subject to zoning and applicable approvals. A qualifying rehabilitation may also offer potential financial incentives. North Carolina provides historic rehabilitation tax credits for eligible projects, while qualifying income-producing properties may be able to combine state incentives with the 20% federal historic rehabilitation tax credit.
